Reefcheck is both a methodology (coral reef monitoring, data recording and submission) and an organisation. Reef Check has introduced two courses which concerned divers can take:
In essence the Discover Reefcheck program introduces divers to the world of coral reef monitoring and data recording. The 1-day program allows divers to experience the dynamics of reef monitoring and provides a foundation for the full Reefcheck Ecodiver Certification course. This involves one dive.
The cost of the dive is 5,500 Baht, more info can be found in out PDF on our downloads page.
The Reef Check Ecodiver course will open your eyes to the underwater world and you will see it in a whole different light. The ECO diver course is a 4 day program that allows divers to participate in Reefcheck surveys and submit data to Reefcheck scientists in preparation for submission to the Reefcheck Database.
The course is very in-depth and will leave you never looking at the reefs in the same way. The Eco Dive course will allow you to join the Reef Check monitoring team and assist in underwater surveys around the world.
The EcoDiver Course provides training in globally standardized Reef Check methodology. You'll learn how to identify different types of coral formation and to access whether they are healthy or damaged.
You'll identify key indicator fish and invertebrates selected by Reef Check for global monitoring and find out how to collect data that can be submitted to ReefCheck's global reef-monitoring database.
Reef Check Ecco Scuba Diver course includes a buoyancy check dive not just to refresh your buoyancy skills but teach you new methods of moving in the water.
The student diver is required to be a PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent (or above) with 25 dives minumum. This dive costs 20,000 Baht.
I have to say this was probably one of the most interesting course's I’ve ever done in my 9 years as a diver and for sure I will certainly be looking at reefs in a different way when diving.
